Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working: 8 Causes and Fixes
If your refrigerator's ice maker stopped producing ice, the problem is usually in the water supply path, the freeze cycle, or the ice maker module itself. Here are the 8 most common causes.
1. Water Supply Line Frozen (Most Common in Cold Climates)
The water line running from the supply valve to the ice maker can freeze, especially if it runs through a cabinet that's cold. No water reaching the ice maker = no ice.
Fix: Locate the water line (usually at the back of the fridge). If it's frozen, defrost it with a hair dryer or warm (not hot) cloth. Once thawed, check that water flows into the ice maker. If the line keeps freezing, consider adding a heat tape or relocating the line.
2. Clogged Fill Valve / Water Inlet
The ice maker has a small fill valve that opens to let water into the ice mold. Mineral deposits can clog this valve, preventing water from entering.
Fix: Unplug the fridge. Remove the ice maker module (usually 2-3 screws). Disconnect the water line. Use a pin to clear any mineral blockage from the fill valve opening. Rinse with vinegar solution if heavily scaled.
3. Ice Maker Mold Heater Failed
The mold heater is a small heating element that warms the ice cube tray slightly to release the ice cubes. If it fails, the ice sticks in the mold and the ice maker thinks it's full, so it doesn't make more.
Test: Unplug fridge. Remove ice maker. Disconnect the heater. Set multimeter to Ohms. The heater should read 20-80Ω. If it reads infinity (open circuit), the heater is failed and needs replacement.
4. Ice Maker Stuck / Jammed
Ice cubes can jam the eject mechanism, or the ice maker arm can get stuck in the down position.
Fix: Remove the ice maker. Check the eject mechanism for stuck ice. Manually rotate the ice maker to verify it moves freely. Clear any ice from the mechanism.
5. Water Inlet Valve (Fridge Supply Valve) Failed
The refrigerator has a water inlet valve (usually at the back, near the floor) that controls water flow to both the ice maker and the water dispenser. If this valve is stuck closed, no water reaches the ice maker.
Test: Unplug fridge. Disconnect the water line from the valve. Manually activate the ice maker (hold the test button if available, or temporarily jumper the valve terminals). If water doesn't flow, the valve is stuck. Replace the valve.
6. Ice Maker Temperature Sensor
The ice maker has a temperature sensor that monitors the freezer temperature. If the sensor reads too warm, the ice maker won't cycle (it needs to be at -2°F / -18°C or colder).
Check: Verify your freezer is set to 0°F (-18°C) or colder. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker will shut off. Check the freezer temperature with a thermometer.
7. Ice Maker Module Failure
The ice maker module (the entire assembly) can fail electronically. The control board sends a signal to the ice maker, and if the module doesn't respond, no ice is made.
Diagnosis: If all other components (water line, fill valve, heater, valve, temperature) check out, the ice maker module itself is likely failed. Module replacement is the fix.
8. Control Board Not Sending Signal
The refrigerator's main control board sends a cycle signal to the ice maker. If the board is faulty, the ice maker never gets the signal to start a cycle.
Diagnosis: This is a service-call repair. If all ice maker components are good but it's not cycling, the control board is the likely fault.
Diagnostic Order
- Check water is actually reaching the ice maker (listen for water during a fill cycle)
- Check water line for freeze
- Check fill valve for clog
- Check freezer temperature (must be ≤0°F)
- Test mold heater (20-80Ω)
- Check for jammed ice
- If all good → module or control board → service call
