Frigidaire Dryer Not Heating: 7 Causes and Fixes

If your Frigidaire dryer is tumbling clothes but not heating, the problem is in the heating circuit. Here are the 7 most common causes, ordered from most to least likely.

1. Lint Buildup (Most Common)

Lint accumulates in the exhaust path and insulates the heating element from the air flow. This is the #1 cause of "dryer not heating" complaints.

2. Pull out the lint screen and clean it
3. Open the rear access panel (if applicable)
4. Disconnect the exhaust hose
5. Use a vacuum to clean lint from the duct and blader wheel
6. Reconnect and run a test cycle

2. Heating Element Burned Out

The heating element is a coiled wire that glows red-hot during the dry cycle. When it burns out, the circuit opens and no heat is produced.

Test: Set multimeter to Ohms (Ω). Disconnect power to the element. Probe both terminals. A good element reads 10-15Ω. An open circuit (infinity) means the element is burned out and needs replacement.

3. Thermal Fuse Blown

The thermal fuse is a safety device that blows if the dryer overheats. Once blown, it interrupts the heating circuit permanently.

Test: Set multimeter to Ohms. Probe both terminals of the thermal fuse. A good fuse reads 0Ω (continuity). If it reads infinity, the fuse is blown and must be replaced. Do not bypass the thermal fuse.

4. Door Switch Fault

Many Frigidaire dryers won't heat unless the door switch is engaged. If the door switch is faulty, the dryer tumbles but doesn't heat.

Test: With the door closed, the switch should read 0Ω. If it reads infinity, the switch is open and needs replacement.

5. High-Limit Thermostat Open

The high-limit thermostat (also called the overheat thermostat) is a safety device that opens if the dryer temperature exceeds ~220°F. If it opens, heating stops.

Test: Should read 0Ω at room temperature. If open (infinity), it needs replacement.

6. Idler Pulley / Drive Belt Issue

If the drum is turning slowly or not at all, the drive belt may be worn. This can affect the blower wheel that moves air over the heating element.

Check: Look at the blower wheel (behind the drum). If it's not spinning freely, it may be blocked or the belt is slipping.

7. Control Board Fault

The electronic control board sends power to the heating circuit. If the board is faulty, it may not energize the heater.

Diagnosis: If all the above tests pass (element, fuse, thermostat, door switch all good) but the dryer still doesn't heat, the control board is likely at fault. This is a service-call repair.
